Acharya Charanya Mahadevan
A Legacy of Excellence in Dance Education
Our Beloved Guru
Smt. Charanya Mahadevan began her training in Bharatanatyam at the age of five under Smt. Lakshmi Somasundaram, a direct disciple of Padma Bhushan Dr. Adyar K. Lakshman. Her early years of learning were nurtured at Parvathanartanalaya, where Smt. Lakshmi Somasundaram was like a second mother, and which became a second home. There, she learned dance and music alongside her peers in a joyful and playful environment, developing both discipline and a lifelong love for the art.

Arangetram & Sacred Performance
She presented her Arangetram in 1996 at the prestigious Nellai Sangeetha Sabha, Tirunelveli, a performance that received critical recognition and was covered by The Hindu. In 2003, she offered her dance at the sacred feet of Lord Nataraja during the renowned Chidambaram Natyanjali Festival, marking a deeply spiritual milestone.
Advanced Studies & Lineage
During the COVID period, Charanya pursued an MFA in Bharatanatyam from Annamalai University, a comprehensive, theory- and history-focused program exploring the evolution of dance from prehistoric times to the present, along with classical and contemporary theory of dance. During this period, she trained under Smt. Uma Anand, daughter of Padma Bhushan K. N. Dhandayuthapani Pillai, and Smt. Induvadana, daughter of Padma Bhushan Dr. Adyar K. Lakshman, further strengthening her lineage-based knowledge of repertoire, technique, and performance theory.
Dance as a Way of Life
For Charanya, dance is a way of life—a practice that informs every aspect of her being. She continues to explore the technical, expressive, and aesthetic depths of Bharatanatyam under the guidance of Kalakshetra Professor K. P. Rakesh, bridging classical tradition with contemporary sensibilities.
